Training for housing leaders of the future

Training for housing leaders of the future

We’re passionate about giving young people in our communities a helping hand to develop their housing careers. Our trainees benefit from high quality training and real-world experience – and we’re currently recruiting for a new trainee. So what’s it like to work and train with us?

Early in 2018, three trainees joined us on a two-year paid work and training programme. Here’s what they told us a few weeks into their training.

“Many of my family work in housing. My auntie in particular is a big influence as she started in a temporary role and moved up to management. From my studies I knew I had a passion for business, housing and care. At Nehemiah I could see the strength of its team and mission. I love the range of duties and the chance to build strong customer interactions. Everyone is supportive and will push me to improve. I plan to use all opportunities, as I aspire to be a housing manager and also a role model to show it can be done with self-belief and hard work. I feel right at home already!”

“This is a whole new challenging and exciting world for me. At university I studied social care and health, and had some work experience in schools and nurseries. Nehemiah has a great work environment. It offers the perfect opportunity for me to grow professionally. The variety of work is a real highlight. I’ve already experienced several aspects first hand – such as learning the ropes of office administration and seeing how homes are let, as well as attending a court hearing and several training courses. I’m looking forward to getting out more into our communities and to meeting you all.”

“My music technology degree was a personal achievement, but jobs in that area are scarce. I started work with a care agency but my contract was soon up. After months of searching, I landed this great role with Nehemiah. Day one was a mixture of nerves and a sense of triumph. Soon I started to smile more and loosen up. No day is the same. My colleagues are excellent, so I’m learning and soaking up the best of their attributes. The last trainee here has gone on to really further her housing career. Seeing her success I know for sure that the training here is raising my prospects.”

And now…

All three have excelled in their training with us, and begin their CIH Level 4 Certificate in Housing Practice early in 2019. Sherelle is currently gaining experience at our Vine Square family supported housing scheme. Jodie is focusing on resident involvement work. Clement found his niche in older people’s housing and successfully applied for a permanent role with us as a retirement scheme manager.
