Let’s Embrace, Educate & Empower One Another This Black History Month!

Posted on: 02 Oct 24

Black History Month is celebrated throughout October – and this year’s theme is Reclaiming Narratives, emphasising the importance of recognising and correcting the narratives of black history and culture.

It will be a busy month of diverse events across the West Midlands, and we hope you will join in as much as possible.

What Is Black History Month?

Black History Month marks the contributions of black people in British society and throughout history, and is a month-long commitment to sharing, celebrating and appreciating the impact of black heritage and culture.

Black History Month takes place during the month of October and is dedicated to raising awareness of and to celebrating our black history though cultural events and activities.

First celebrated in the UK in 1987, Black History Month began in the US in the 1920s before launching in the UK on the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean. The event also takes place in Canada, Germany and Ireland.

Black History Month 2024

This year’s Black History Month is committed to correcting historical inaccuracies and to celebrating untold success stories – with the ultimate goal of embracing, educating and empowering one another through the stories that have shaped our black history, culture and identity.

The theme of Reclaiming Narratives is about more than simply a theme for Black History Month. It is part of a desire to acknowledge and appreciate the enormous contributions of black individuals throughout history.
