Tips For Tackling Damp & Mould

Posted on: 01 Jan 25

The New Year has certainly started with cold and wet days! This type of weather can make our homes more vulnerable to becoming damp and developing mould – the difference in temperature between the outside and your home leads to condensation.

The best way to fight damp and mould is to take action as soon as you spot the signs.

Tips For Preventing & Tackling Damp & Mould

At Nehemiah, we want all our tenants to be comfortable, warm and safe in their homes – and this includes living in a home free from damp and mould.

To help prevent damp and mould spreading in your home, we have some top tips for you:

  • Use A Dehumidifier
If you spot early signs of damp in your home, such as small black dots on surfaces or excess moisture in a room, use a dehumidifier to dry out the air and prevent the buildup of moisture.
  • Open The Windows
Try to air your home as often as possible, and always open the window or turn on the extractor fan when you’re showering.
  • Cooking Sense
When you’re cooking, turn the extractor fan on and put lids on saucepans.
  • Dry Clothes Outside
Whenever possible, dry clothes outside. Don’t dry them on radiators – if you need to dry them indoors, use a clothes airer in a room with a window open and only use a tumble dryer that has venting connected to the outdoors or has a condenser.
  • Wipe Away Any Patches
If you see any small patches of mould, wipe the areas down with an anti-fungal spray to stop it spreading.
  • Optimum Temperature
Heat your home to between 16 and 21 degrees.
  • Keep Your Home Clear
Don’t overfill your home with furniture and possessions, and make sure your cupboards and shelves aren’t too crowded. Move furniture away from the wall by an inch or 2 so that there is space for air to move around.
