Staying Warm & Saving Energy This Winter

Posted on: 19 Jan 26

We’re Supporting Energy Savers Week 2026!

At Nehemiah Housing Association, your comfort and wellbeing are always our priority, especially during the cold winter months. That’s why we’re supporting Energy Savers Week 2026, running from 19–25 January, led by the Energy Saving Trust and Citizens Advice to help households stay warm while reducing energy use and costs.

This January has already brought very cold weather and snow across the UK, reminding us how important it is to be prepared. Meteorologists expect that cold spells can sometimes continue into February and even early March, meaning good energy habits now can protect both your comfort and your finances.

Here are practical energy-saving tips for tenants — many supported by the official Energy Savers Week guidance — to help you through winter and beyond.

Top Tips to Stay Warm & Cut Energy Costs

1. Check & Care for Your Heating System

  • Bleed your radiators if you notice cold spots — this helps them heat more efficiently.
  • Set your thermostat wisely: aim for the lowest temperature that feels comfortable (typically between 18–21°C).
  • Book a boiler service before the coldest weather hits to make sure it’s running safely and efficiently.

These simple steps can make a noticeable difference in how your home retains heat through a long winter.

Small Changes That Make a Big Difference

Here are other effective and easy ways to save energy that won’t cost much:

  • Turn off lights and appliances when not in use — don’t leave them on standby.
  • Check for draughts around doors and windows and use draught excluders or thermal curtains to help keep the warmth in.
  • Wash clothes at 30°C and use full loads to reduce energy use from the washing machine.
  • Dry clothes naturally where possible rather than on a tumble dryer.

These everyday actions add up over time to lower energy bills and help you stay cosy.

Be Winter-Ready — Even When It’s Freezing Outside

The UK’s recent cold snap has brought snow and freezing temperatures to many regions. When it’s this chilly, parts of your home — like pipes — are at risk of freezing and burst damage if not properly protected.

🔹 Keep your heating on a low setting, even when out, to help prevent pipes freezing.
🔹 Insulate exposed pipes with inexpensive lagging foam to reduce heat loss.

If a pipe does freeze, never use boiling water — warm water is safer, and call a registered plumber if damage is suspected.
