Dementia Action Week 2023: Help Is Available

We are taking part in Dementia Action Week 2023, to help raise awareness of the support that’s available for those suffering from memory loss or individuals who are concerned about loved ones being affected by dementia, and to encourage people to ‘act on dementia’ to get a diagnosis.

Dementia Action Week 2023 runs from 15-21 May and is run by the Alzheimer’s Society.

The annual week-long campaign is Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest and longest-running awareness campaign that aims to encourage people to ‘act on dementia’.

Act On Dementia & Seek Help

During the campaign in May, Alzheimer’s Society will work with individuals and specialist organisations nationwide to encourage people to take action and to seek help when needed.

The charity’s core message is one that Nehemiah Housing strongly supports – that memory loss isn’t simply a part of getting old and that if memory loss is impacting on your life and daily routine, you should do something about it. Help and support are available and it’s a good idea to talk to your GP for advice on whether your symptoms are a sign of dementia and to find ways to cope with memory loss.

Last year, Dementia Action Week 2022 effectively raised awareness and encouraged people to seek help if they or loved ones were experiencing any symptoms of memory loss. The charity experienced a 43% average increase in calls to their dementia support line from individuals wanting advice and information, as a result of the week-long campaign.

The goal for Dementia Action Week 2023 is to increase diagnosis rates by helping individuals understand what’s stopping them from getting a diagnosis and highlighting the importance of being diagnosed.

Fundamentally, it’s scary to think you or a loved one may have dementia, but it is always better to know so you can put a plan in place and access the available help and support that’s needed.

Alzheimer’s Society is working together with healthcare specialists to improve people’s diagnosis experience and ensure it is better timed.
