Mental Health Awareness Week 2023: Nehemiah Is Here To Help
Posted on: 15 May 23
We are taking part in the initiative to raise awareness of mental health and the support that’s available for people living with anxiety, during Mental Health Awareness Week 2023, which runs from 15-21 May.

The charity The Mental Health Foundation oversees the Mental Health Awareness Week every year, and the official theme for the 2023 campaign week is anxiety.
The organisation wants everyone to look at how anxiety affects people living with mental illness, to consider what external factors can trigger anxiety, and to help to find ways to support individuals suffering from anxiety.
Nehemiah Is Here To Help
Support is at the heart of all we do at Nehemiah Housing Association – our homes for tenants are affordable and comfortable and built around a supportive community.
We want all our tenants to be happy in their homes, which is why we have measures in place to look after people’s wellbeing. We are here to help when needed, including when tenants have financial concerns or feel anxiety over the cost of living.
For Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 we have joined forces with Birmingham based African and Caribbean mental health hub Catalyst 4 Change and we will be hosting a tenant event online called ‘Managing Mental Health during the Cost of Living Crisis’ aimed at supporting individuals with their mental health and wellbeing.
Our Customer Engagement Officer, Marcia Cunnison has spoken to tenants over the last few weeks to see what topics they would like covered in the session. We have had a lot of response and the topics tenants would like covered are:
- How to report certain issues
- Managing mental health in relatives and friends
- Identifying the signs of mental health.
- Knowing the signs and how to respond
- Laws surrounding mental health.
- Socializing, what is out there – tackling loneliness.
- Managing stress and anxiety
- The causes and what support are out there.
- Dealing with Mental Health issue without medication
- Managing mental health issues within a work environment
The event will be held on 25 May at 6pm and we will be in touch soon with full details.

Advice & Support
As a guide, we have some suggestions for activities that might help with your anxiety, and these include:
- talking to a friend or relative about what is making you feel anxious
- writing down what is making you feel anxious
- having worry-time when you schedule a time to focus on your worries
- focusing on your physical health
- making sure you get enough sleep
- eating a healthy diet
- doing meditation and breathing exercises
When you feel anxious, it’s hard to take care of yourself – but often, it’s the little things that make a big difference to your wellbeing. By making time to speak to friends or family, or go for a walk, or have a good night’s sleep, or cook a nice meal, or meditate for half an hour, you allow yourself time to breathe and process how you’re feeling and often the activity boosts your mood.
We’re all different and we’d love to hear what works for you when you feel anxious.
Do share any examples on our social media channels of what helps you when you are feeling anxious, and use the hashtag #ToHelpMyAnxiety
