Nehemiah Supports Fuel Poverty Awareness Day

Posted on: 27 Nov 24

Nehemiah is proud to be doing all it can to support this year’s Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, run by National Energy Action and taking place on Wednesday 27 November.

With the cost-of-living crisis raging, an estimated 6million households will be in fuel poverty this winter.

What Is Fuel Poverty?

Fuel poverty is a term used to describe households that are unable to heat their homes, and as a result are unable to stay warm and healthy. The knock-on effects of increasing debt and health problems can be catastrophic and often go untold, as people face daily challenges to stay warm.

When winter arrives, the nights get darker and the temperatures drop, causing energy bills to increase. Those least able to afford to pay their energy bills are the ones most likely to suffer from fuel poverty, getting into debt and damaging their health.

For example, individuals sometimes have no choice other than not switch the heating on when they need to or to keep their curtains closed all day to conserve heat. Problems arising from these dilemmas include damp in the home and associated illnesses with living in a damp environment, as well as physical and mental health issues that cold homes and rising debt can cause.

What Is Fuel Poverty Awareness Day 2024?

Run by the UK’s fuel poverty charity, National Energy Action, Fuel Poverty Awareness Day is dedicated to raising awareness of fuel poverty and highlighting the number of people who will be struggling to live in a warm, safe home this winter.

National Energy Action will run events across the country to bring organisations together that are involved in helping to tackle fuel poverty, provide training to those in the sector, and offer advice and information to households on the energy crisis and the help that is available.

The charity is calling for the government to take action on fuel poverty – for example, by providing a help-to-repay scheme for energy debt and grant funds for low-income households, and by increasing investment in energy efficiencies for homes.

It’s an important day, which is why we support it at Nehemiah. You can help raise awareness of fuel poverty by supporting the day on 27 November, too.
