Staying Safe This Festive Season

Posted on: 05 Dec 24

We’re into December now and this weekend will see many people deck the halls and add a festive sprinkle to their homes, if they’ve not done so already.

In the excitement of all the merriment, it’s important to stay safe by following some simple rules for fire safety this Christmas.

Tips For Staying Fire Safe This Christmas

At Nehemiah, we want all our tenants to be comfortable, warm and safe in their homes.

To help you stay fire safe this Christmas, we have some top tips for you:

  • Tree
A real tree that dries out can become a fire hazard so be sure to water it often and place it away from any heat sources. If you need to move any furniture to make space for your tree – real or artificial – then be careful not to block any exits.
  • Lights
Check that your fairy lights meet the necessary safety standards, and that you don’t overload the sockets with too many plugs from different strings of lights.
  • Candles
Keep all candles and tea lights in proper holders and on heat resistant surfaces. Make sure they’re placed out of reach of children and pets, and away from potential hazards such as curtains or a shelf placed too closely above. Blow all candles out when you’re not in the house or when going to bed.
  • Decorations
Keep decorations away from heaters and heat sources such as fireplaces and candles.
  • Test Regularly
Test your smoke alarm regularly to make sure it’s in good working order.
  • Check On Others
Pop in to see neighbours and loved ones this festive season, to make sure they’re okay and staying safe.
