How To Spot Signs Of Anti-Social Behaviour
Posted on: 06 Jan 25
Anti-social behaviour (ASB) can ruin communities and make life unnecessarily difficult for individuals and families in a local area. However, there are steps you can take to tackle ASB by spotting the signs in the first place.
What Is ASB?
ASB relates to any behaviour that causes harm, distress, inconvenience or tension to a community or individual. The behaviours can be wide ranging, and include harassment, intimidation, aggression, noise disturbances, and vandalism.
Why Is ASB Bad?
It is bad because of the complete lack of consideration that it shows towards others’ wellbeing, safety and rights. It can have a negative impact on a community and individual lives, and sometimes can put people’s lives in danger.
This is why Nehemiah feels so strongly about ASB and tackling it as early as possible. It’s important for all our tenants to spot the early signs of anti-social behaviour so that, together, we can take the most appropriate actions.
What Are The Signs Of ASB?
There are many different types of ASB, but some of the most common signs include:
- Noise Disturbance
Ongoing noise disturbance shouldn’t be tolerated as it has a negative impact on the local area and causes distress to those living nearby. Noise disturbances include shouting late a night, loud music late at night, and dogs barking a lot. - Disrespectful Behaviour
Failing to consider other people’s feelings or property, is a form of ASB as it causes upset. A lack of respect for communal spaces and individuals includes fly tipping, littering, graffiti and vandalism to homes or the community. - Aggressive Behaviour
Unprovoked aggression can take the form of physical or verbal attacks towards people or property, such as fights, threatening individuals or damaging properties. - Bullying Behaviour
Whether it’s spreading rumours or targeting someone to make them feel small, bullying is a type of ASB. - Misuse Of Drugs And Alcohol
Being intoxicated in public or using illegal substances and littering with empty bottles, cans and used needles, is anti-social behaviour.
Nehemiah Is Here To Help & Support
We want every tenant to feel safe and comfortable in their home, which is why we take ASB very seriously.
To help tackle ASB in your community, it’s important to do the following:
- If you spot any signs or witness any criminal acts, you should report it to the police or 101
- If you think your life is in danger or someone else’s life is in danger, call 999
- If you know of ongoing ASB, report it to us so we can take action
When you report any anti-social behaviour to us, you can do so anonymously, but it’s important to understand that remaining anonymous restricts what we can do to tackle the behaviour. We will support and advise you when we speak to you, and it’s always best to report ASB than not to.
To report ASB, you can contact your Housing Officer or call us on 0121 358 0966 or email contact@nehemiah.co.uk and we will do all we can to tackle the issue and to help you to feel safe and comfortable in your home and community.
