Can You Help Us To Raise Awareness Of Hoarding Disorder?
Posted on: 11 May 25
This year’s National Hoarding Awareness Week takes place between 12th and 16th May, and we would like as many as possible of our tenants to join in to help raise awareness of hoarding disorder and the support that is available.
The week is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about hoarding disorder, to raise the profile of the condition throughout our communities and help ensure that every tenant and their loved ones knows there is support if needed.
What Is Hoarding Awareness Week?
Hoarding Awareness Week is an annual campaign designed to raise awareness and provide education on hoarding behaviour and what we can do to support those struggling with hoarding disorder.
By breaking down the stigma associated with hoarding through increasing people’s understanding of the disorder, the campaign aims to promote empathy in society and to encourage individuals suffering from hoarding disorder to seek the help they need.
The World Health Organisation classified hoarding disorder as a mental health condition in 2018. Currently, it is estimated that 92% of those with hoarding disorder also have another mental health condition co-existing.
What Happens During Hoarding Awareness Week 2025?
This year, Hoarding Awareness Week has the theme of Hoarding Disorder and Executive Functioning.
Executive functioning includes the skills needed to plan, focus and multitask. It is how we regulate our thoughts and actions to achieve our goals. This year’s campaign is about how this plays a part in hoarding behaviour.
During the week, people can get involved with the seminars that are running – topics include understanding hoarding, hoarding and mental capacity, hoarding behaviours and executive function, and chronic disorganisation vs hoarding.
The week-long campaign aims to raise awareness of hoarding disorder to help people understand that it is a complex mental health condition that can have a big impact on someone’s life – their wellbeing, happiness, relationships and safety.
The campaign is designed to educate communities about the condition and also about how people can support loved ones suffering from hoarding disorder. By increasing understanding, those in need should feel encouraged to access resources, better treatment plans and seek earlier intervention.
