Raising Awareness Of Hoarding Disorder
Posted on: 10 May 26
Hoarding disorder is a challenging mental health condition that affects many of us but is often misunderstood as a lifestyle choice or someone simply not bothering to keep their home in order. We understand the impact on people’s lives, relationships and wellbeing that hoarding disorder can have and want to encourage all our tenants to find out more about the condition and the ways we can support those suffering from it.
Hoarding disorder was classified by the World Health Organisation as a mental health condition in 2018. However, there is still a lack of understanding and support surrounding the condition.
What Is Hoarding Awareness Week?
Hoarding Awareness Week is an annual campaign committed to raising awareness and providing education on hoarding disorder and the many ways we can support friends and family who are struggling with hoarding behaviour. It’s important we make the most of this opportunity to increase our understanding of the disorder to ensure our communities are aware and empathetic of individuals in need of support.
By breaking down the stigma linked with hoarding, more individuals will feel able to seek support without fear of being judged.
All of us here at Nehemiah are hoping our tenants come together this year to support National Hoarding Awareness Week, taking place between 11th and 15th May 2026.
Together, we can help to raise awareness of hoarding disorder and behaviour and highlight the support that is available for those suffering from the condition.
What Is The Focus Of Hoarding Awareness Week 2026?
Hoarding Awareness Week 2026 is focussing on National Guidelines For Hoarding Support, with the aim of shaping national guidelines for hoarding support.
The plan for this year’s campaign is to develop a growing national conversation about hoarding disorder and the urgent need for a standardised national approach to support. The UK Parliament had its first debate on this in October 2025, and the campaign’s aim is to build on this.
During the week, the campaign is calling for individuals with lived experience of hoarding disorder, their friends and family together with practitioners, to support the conversation and share their stories.
People can also get involved with the Hoarding UK National Conference 2026 on Thursday 15th May online via Teams. It costs £10 or a smaller donation to join the conversation and be part of helping the UK government to create guidelines on support and awareness of hoarding disorder.
Every year, the campaign aims to raise awareness of hoarding disorder and education, to improve people’s knowledge of the mental health condition, and to break down the stigma that people who hoard are lazy – it’s vital people understand hoarding is a complex mental health condition that makes life very difficult for those who suffer from it.
