Help Us To Keep You Safe – Support Gas Safety Week This September!

Posted on: 13 Sep 26

We want as many of our tenants as possible to support Gas Safety Week this September – it takes place between 14th and 20th September 2026 and has at its core a message about the importance of regular gas safety checks in the home.

Join us as we help to raise awareness of the importance of gas safety checks and keeping homes gas safe. It’s vital our tenants understand the legal and moral importance of allowing Nehemiah’s heating engineers into their homes for gas appliance safety checks.

What Is Gas Safety Week?

Run by Gas Safe Register, this national safety campaign is committed to keeping the UK gas safe.

This year’s theme is “Take No Chances”. The emphasis for 2026 is to remind people that when it comes to gas safety, risks should not be ignored – ever.

More than a thousand people a year are affected by carbon monoxide poisoning, sometimes fatally. This campaign raises awareness of gas safety in homes and businesses alike – with the aim of reducing the number of people harmed annually.

Nehemiah will once again be supporting Gas Safety Week and want our tenants to join in, come together and support this campaign – and support one another to keep themselves safe and protect communities too.

Gas Safety Compliance

To stay safe in your home or workplace, it’s essential that you or your business have regular gas appliance safety checks.

Gas safety checks involve inspecting the gas appliances in homes or businesses, including pipes and fittings to ensure they’re operating as they should and are well maintained. It takes around an hour on average to complete.

As your landlord, Nehemiah has a legal duty to keep your home safe – when it is time for your regular gas safety check, we will arrange a time and date that suits you, and it’s vital you let us in to carry out the safety check.

As our tenant, you have a duty to allow access for safety checks. It is part of your tenancy agreement to enable us to service your gas appliances once a year to ensure they’re functioning safely. So, make sure you look out for your letter informing you of your gas appliance service appointment.

Failing to allow access for a safety check could be a breach of your tenancy agreement and we could claim damages for this breach of contract, especially if refusing an annual safety check led to a dangerous situation or incident.

Gas Safety Tips

To help you stay gas safe in your home, we advise our tenants to:

  • Allow a safety check of your gas appliances every 12 months – as part of your tenancy agreement, we service your fitted gas appliances once a year
  • Always use a Gas Safe Registered engineer for installations and services
  • Check your engineer’s Gas Safe ID card
  • Know the warning signs of gas appliances – a yellow rather than blue flame, black marks on or around the appliance, excessive condensation in the room
  • Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness
  • Make sure your carbon monoxide alarm is working
  • Keep vents and chimneys clear

If you are unsure about any gas appliances or want to have your gas boiler checked, call our Repair Line on 0800 849 1400 or 03030 301 000 from your mobile.
