Saving energy and money: useful advice shared with Shanti Niketan residents

There was plenty of interest when residents at Shanti Niketan retirement scheme welcomed Andy Stevens from Smart NRG Limited for an informative session on saving energy and reducing household costs.

Andy introduced residents to the Local Energy Advice Partnership (LEAP) programme, which is funded by energy companies and provides eligible households with practical advice and support to make their homes warmer and more energy efficient.

The session covered a wide range of topics, from simple ways to use less energy to support that could help with household bills and wider financial pressures.

Residents heard about the range of measures and services that may be available through LEAP, including:

• Energy-saving items such as LED bulbs, radiator reflector panels, draught excluders and energy-saving sockets with remote controls.
• Air fryers and slow cookers, where available and subject to eligibility.
• Heated airers and dehumidifiers during the winter, where available and subject to eligibility.
• Advice on storage heaters and getting the most from heating systems.
• Guidance around damp and mould.
• Support with energy debt.
• Benefit entitlement checks to help residents identify any financial support they may be entitled to.
• Help with joining the Priority Services Register.
• Support to access eligible discounts on water bills.

A chance to ask questions

The informal session gave residents an opportunity to ask questions, discuss their own circumstances and find out more about the support available.

There was a positive response, with several residents providing their contact details so that Andy could follow up with them individually.

The visit is part of Nehemiah’s ongoing work to connect residents with practical support that can make a difference to their day-to-day lives. Following the successful session at Shanti Niketan, we are also looking at opportunities for Smart NRG Limited to visit other Nehemiah schemes.
